Rodney from Mayfield
Once upon a time, 7EX was the radio station of choice for the pupils at Evandale
Primary School. This was back in the days when TAA was still TAA, Duran Duran weren't
fat and Steve Kernahan's mullet wasn't out of fashion.
In fact, this was before that famous mullet had made it to Princes Park. In 1984 7EX
ruled the airwaves (as far as we were concerned) and one of our favourite shows on 7EX
was the nightly request show. Here's a typical on-air conversation:
DJ: |
OK, that was Jim Diamond with "I Should've Known Better", what a great voice! And
now we've got Tammy from Prospect on the phone. Hi Tammy! |
TAMMY: |
Hi! |
DJ: |
What are you up to tonight, Tammy? |
TAMMY: |
Nothing much. |
DJ: |
Okaaaaay, now what song do you want us to play tonight? |
TAMMY: |
Could you play "Doctor! Doctor!" by the Thompson Twins please? |
DJ: |
And do you want to say hi to anyone tonight Tammy? |
TAMMY: |
Umm, yeah, I wanna say hi to Kylie, Shaun, Jason, Michelle, Kelly, Deano,
Shareen, Kylie D., Shazza, Kylie from Perth, Wazza, Wacka, Robbo, Chook, Olly,
Dwight, Hayley, Macca, Trace and I'd like to say a big hi to Rodney From Mayfield! |
So the rules for requesting a song on 7EX were that when you were asked what you
were doing you had to say "Nothing much" and you had to say hi to Rodney From Mayfield.
The question is: Who was Rodney From Mayfield? Where is he now? Last time I was in
Launceston I asked a friend if they knew about Rodney From Mayfield, and I think she
said that he was now a transvestite, but she wasn't sure.
Rodney From Mayfield - are you out there? Are you still in Mayfield? Are you still
a Rodney?
(email me with any Rodney spottings.)
